CHAPTER 10
Abducted by The Winged-Men
It was not many hours later that the Zaran city of Caliat became visible to us in the distance. I was surprised, for the city seemed beautiful beyond belief, and it actually glowed of gold and silver in the bright red sun light. It was a sight to behold.
As we flew closer I noted many well formed and gorgeous buildings of various designs each one thoroughly enhancing the beauty of Caliat. It seemed strange to me that the barbarous Winged-men would choose to live in such a lovely city, for art and beauty to them were looked upon as nothing but weakness. They had no interest in such things. I knew that such loathsome creatures could never have built a shining city like Caliat.
Of course, I was soon to learn that Caliat was one of the oldest cities on Ares, having been built by the ancient green race long before the Zarans ever came and conquered the planet. Also, the city had been the Zaransâ most recent conquest, having been the last and most glorious city of the green people to hold out against the Winged-men over a thousand years ago.
This was the city that Tar-Goolâs ancestors had come from and had ruled over. The city they hard created. This was the glorious city of Caliat. Now not so glorious and under enemy occupation. Tar-Gool constantly spoke of the glory of the past people from this city, before the dark blight of the Zarans had come and destroyed everything here and all over Ares. It was before an entire world of green humans had been enslaved, or made outlaws on their own planet.
Now I realized why, that when I had first met Tar-Gool he had referred to himself as the Emperor of Ares. For in truth he was a direct descendent from that last green emperor of shining Caliat before the beastly Zarans overran the city. And I could not think of a better man, nor a more patriotic devotee to Ares freedom than Tar-Gool to bear that honorary title. However, sensing his impending death through old age, Tar-Gool now wished that I would take that title when he passed on. When I had asked him why he wanted me to take that burden, he told me that he had his own special reason, but he mysteriously said that he could not tell me as yet. I remained perplexed.
As we came closer to Caliat I now could notice that the Zarans had ruined much of the great old city. Neglect and decay was the results of their reign. The city lay in ruins. However, much of itâs ancient glory and grace were still evident. It was sad to see what had once been, and then what was left now under Zaran rule, even though one could see the remains of what once had been a magnificent city. Caliat had been truly a city befitting an emperor.
Soon we were flying right over the huge city center and I noticed Winged-men everywhere.
